Limestone, brick, and masonry are among the worst common building materials for WiFi — each wall can absorb the majority of your signal, and the 5GHz band that carries your speed suffers most. The durable fix is running Ethernet to two or three ceiling-mounted access points, so strong WiFi originates in each zone instead of begging to pass through rock.
The physics, briefly
WiFi is radio, and dense material attenuates radio. Drywall barely matters; stone and masonry matter enormously, and the thicker and denser the wall, the worse it gets. Add the foil-faced radiant barrier common in Texas attics and metal roofs on lake houses, and a Hill Country home is practically a Faraday cage with nice views. Your router isn't broken — it's shouting through rock.
Why the mesh kit disappointed you
Mesh systems relay wirelessly: satellite units rebroadcast what they receive through those same walls. Each wireless hop can halve your throughput, and a satellite placed where signal is already weak just rebroadcasts weakness with a stronger-looking bar icon. Mesh is a fine drywall-house product. In lakeside stone construction, it's a bandage.
The fix that actually lasts
Run Cat6 from your router to ceiling-mounted access points — typically one per zone the stone divides: main living area, bedroom wing, upstairs or office, maybe the patio. Each AP delivers full-strength, full-speed WiFi born on the right side of the walls, they hand your phone off seamlessly as you move, and the wire feeding them is immune to everything that ruins wireless relays.
In finished homes we fish those runs through the attic with small, patched openings — it's a one-day job for most floor plans, and we'll tell you up front if your construction makes any run genuinely hard (slab two-stories, vaulted ceilings, we're looking at you).
What to expect
